At Suburban Propane, giving back is prioritized through our SuburbanCares philanthropic pillar, with a commitment made to supporting those in need and strengthening community bonds across the company’s 42-state footprint. Investing in local initiatives enriches lives and builds a more sustainable and vibrant future for everyone.

This week, Suburban Propane partnered with Warren County Habitat for Humanity on a new construction project, with Assemblyman John DiMaio (NJ District 23) in attendance. Warren County Habitat for Humanity strives to eliminate inadequate housing in its local community and beyond. Suburban Propane’s Washington, New Jersey Customer Service Center employees volunteered to help build a home for its future residents. Their efforts reflect the Company’s dedication to positively impacting where it matters most—close to home.

“We are so grateful for Suburban Propane’s support, both from their generous donation and their assisting our build crew on site! Each year, September 11th serves as a time of reflection, remembrance, and reverence for the lives lost and the heroes who rose above during one of the most tragic days in American history. To honor their memory and the selfless first responders who risked everything to save others, Suburban Propane, in collaboration with its national partner, the American Red Cross, united to host the 10th Annual September 11th Jersey City Police & Fire 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive in Jersey City, New Jersey.

This blood drive is not just a one-time event but a continuous tribute to those who gave their lives, and an opportunity to give life to those in need. Blood donation is a critical act of kindness that can save lives in many ways. From trauma victims and surgical patients to those battling life-threatening illnesses, the need for blood is constant. According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, a person in the U.S. requires a blood transfusion, and by donating, you’re contributing directly to saving lives.

The importance of blood donation extends beyond emergencies. Hospitals nationwide rely on a steady blood supply to perform surgeries, treat cancer patients or individuals with Sickle Cell Disease, and help those with chronic illnesses. Blood shortages can lead to delays in care and put lives at risk. By coming together as a community to donate blood, we honor the bravery and sacrifice of 9/11’s heroes and embody their spirit of service and compassion. This memorial blood drive collected 116 pints, which can potentially save upward of 348 lives.

Suburban Propane is grateful for its dedicated employees who donated to our memorial blood drive or volunteered their time and energy to support donors during this event as part of the Company’s SuburbanCares philanthropic platform, focused on supporting and giving back to the communities across Suburban Propane’s national footprint.  A blood donation can be the gift that saves a life, offering hope and healing in the face of tragedy. Together, people can continue the legacy of courage and selflessness that defines this solemn day.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org , or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, or before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

All individuals who donated blood at the event were given a commemorative t-shirt and a Red Cross first aid kit, generously provided by Suburban Propane, a dedicated national supporter of American Red Cross Blood Services.

Suburban Propane partnered with Sharing House, a non-profit organization in Brevard, North Carolina, for a local volunteering initiative to combat hunger and poverty affecting residents in the region. Sharing House and its volunteers have been connecting with community members for over four decades to deliver crisis assistance and develop lasting solutions to alleviate hunger and poverty.

Sharing House provides essential services such as rent and utility assistance, supplying food, gently used clothing and household goods, and more to those who need it most. Their work is critical, as nearly half of the county’s residents struggle with unaffordable rent, and more than a quarter are considered low-income. Sharing House’s mission offers pathways out of poverty, providing support and resources that empower individuals and families to achieve stability and self-sufficiency.

Community-based volunteerism is a powerful force for good and Suburban Propane recognizes the value of serving its local neighborhoods and residents in need. Through its philanthropic pillar SuburbanCares, the Company and it’s employees are dedicated to making a positive impact in the areas where it operates.

Recently local employees from Suburban Propane’s Customer Service Center contributed time and energy to volunteer at Sharing House. The Company’s employees helped sort and organize donations, cleaned and organized storage areas, and performed light landscaping for the non-profit. Furthermore, Suburban Propane made a monetary donation to Sharing House’s emergency heating assistance program, which supports close to 1,000 low-income households during the winter, further impacting the community in a direct and meaningful way.

By collaborating with non-profits like Sharing House, Suburban Propane and its employees actively address immediate community needs while supporting long-term solutions that create lasting benefits for those who need them most. In its natural state, propane gas is colorless and odorless, making it difficult to detect in the air – particularly when it comes to gas leaks. To ensure that propane gas can be readily detected a distinct odorant is intentionally added to help people recognize the presence of gas in the air. So, what does propane gas smell like?

If you’ve ever smelled gas before, you may be familiar with the unpleasant scent that’s described similar to the smell of rotten eggs, sulfur, or skunk spray. To some, it is a foul stench difficult to ignore but serves a critical purpose. Since propane gas is colorless and odorless, a chemical additive called Ethyl Mercaptan is infused with propane to make it easier to detect (gas leaks), which can be dangerous if not addressed promptly.

If you suspect a gas leak, it is crucial to act quickly to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. PERC recommends the following steps:

  • No flames or sparks. Immediately put out any open flames or smoking items/devices. Do not operate lights or use electronic devices, as a spark could ignite the gas.
  • Leave the area immediately. If you suspect a gas leak and recognize what propane smells like, vacate the area promptly and do not return until a qualified person establishes you are safe to return.
  • Report the leak. Contact your local emergency services (police or fire department) and propane supplier to report the leak.
  • Turn off the gas supply. Locate the main gas supply and shut off the propane tank gas flow by closing the valve (turning the dial to the right). You should only do this if you know where and how.
  • Check your system. When your propane supplier or emergency responders arrive, have them check the entire area and gas system to ensure no leaks are present and it is safe to return inside or resume using your appliances.

Understanding what propane smells like is crucial for alerting users of this colorless and odorless gas. Utilizing Ethyl Mercaptan as an odorant has been established as an effective safety measure related to propane. In short, what does propane smell like? Propane smells of rotten eggs or sulfur, making it easy to alert users. If you suspect a gas leak, act quickly and call for help to ensure your safety.

Businesses nationwide have begun transitioning away from traditional fuels like diesel or gasoline to clean alternative sources. Fleets from school districts and municipalities to trolley street cars, shuttle operations, and taxi companies can experience the advantages of switching to propane autogas. There are four main ways propane autogas can help businesses improve operations and cost savings while making strides toward a cleaner, greener future.

Propane Autogas is a Clean Alternative Fuel Choice

When compared to gasoline or diesel, propane has a lower carbon footprint and emits fewer harmful chemicals into the environment. Recognized as a clean alternative fuel under the federal Clean Air Act, propane is a perfect energy source for fleet vehicles. By adopting propane autogas, businesses can contribute to improved air quality and, contingent on state regulations, comply with increasingly stringent environmental mandates. In addition, this may enhance the public image of businesses as responsible corporate citizens.

Maximizing Cost Savings with Propane Autogas

Businesses and fleet managers frequently seek ways to optimize operational costs, and propane autogas presents an attractive solution. Propane is generally more affordable than gasoline or diesel, translating into immediate cost savings. Additionally, government incentives and tax credits for alternative fuel usage can further enhance cost savings, making propane autogas an economically viable choice for fleet managers looking to maximize their budget without compromising the environment’s health.

How Propane Autogas Boosts Uptime and Efficiency

While diesel engines may require significant time in the repair shop to fix intricate emissions systems, propane-powered fleet vehicles often require less frequent maintenance due to their clean-burning properties. Propane autogas reduces maintenance expenses over time, translating directly into cost-efficiency while ensuring the business remains operational with dependable performance.

Infrastructure and Accessibility: Key Drivers of Propane Autogas Adoption

Propane autogas benefits from an extensive and well-established refueling infrastructure, making it a convenient choice for fleet vehicles. Refueling stations are increasingly common and easily accessible nationwide, ensuring fleet vehicles can refuel with ease during their routes. Plus, switching to propane autogas doesn’t require significant changes to existing vehicles, as modern conversions are reliable and straightforward. This smooth transition process encourages fleet managers to embrace propane autogas without disrupting operations.

Reliable, cost-effective, with a readily available infrastructure, propane autogas for fleet vehicles satisfies demand while supporting clean energy sources. For businesses interested in optimizing their fleets, contact a Suburban Propane Autogas Specialist to help determine the best option for your vehicles.

What to Know When Starting with Propane for Your Home https://www.suburbanpropane.com/blog/what-to-know-when-starting-with-propane-for-your-home/ Fri, 16 Aug 2024 13:00:35 +0000 https://suburbanph.wpengine.com/what-to-know-when-starting-with-propane-for-your-home/ Get your house properly set up to deliver the comfort and reliability of propane power. If you’re buying a house with a propane tank or switching to propane from a different power source, you’re on the path to more sustainable living, and set to experience the dynamic capabilities of propane energy. You’re also probably wondering what the next steps are to ensure that your home is properly set up to deliver that propane power.

At Suburban Propane, we recognize the significance of having propane as your primary energy source, regardless of whether you’re switching to or buying a home powered by propane. Here’s what to know when starting with propane for your home and how Suburban Propane helps homeowners get set up to deliver the comfort and reliability of propane power.

Propane Tank Sizes to Fit Your Needs

Propane tank sizes are available in different volumes to fit the various requirements for powering your home. If you’re buying a house with a propane tank, the existing propane tank will most likely have the fuel capacity to meet your needs. However, if you are transitioning to propane for your home from another energy source, it’s a good rule of thumb to identify which size is best for you.

Propane storage tank capacity ranges from 125 gallons to more than 1,000 gallons. To help you understand fuel storage capacity, Suburban Propane’s simple guide explores common propane uses and propane tank sizes. Determining your tank size depends on how much propane you’ll use. Our propane experts can work with you to ensure you have the size that best meets your needs.

Differences Between Owning or Leasing a Propane Tank

Homeowners can lease a propane tank with Suburban Propane or choose to purchase one through a retailer. Customers who own tanks are responsible for the protection, container upkeep, and tank maintenance, which should be performed only by a qualified service technician. Suburban Propane offers tank rentals and, as your propane supplier, will take care of any needed repairs or replacements.

Comparison of Above Ground and Underground Tanks

Propane tanks can be placed above ground or buried underground, and the option depends on whether the tank is customer-owned or leased. If you are buying a house with a propane tank already on the property, it’s good to determine whether the previous owners were renting or had outright ownership. Both options offer different advantages and may vary depending on installation costs, preferences for landscaping aesthetics, and environmental factors.

Delivery Capabilities: Automatic Refills vs Will-Call Deliveries

With reliable and flexible fuel delivery options, customers can select between automatic refills or will-call deliveries. With automatic refills, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing we conveniently schedule your propane deliveries automatically using advanced technology and calculations to predict when the next refill will arrive. In contrast, customers with will-call deliveries schedule fuel deliveries on-demand by monitoring the propane tank gauge and requesting as needed.

Keep in mind that season or climate may contribute to the frequency you request a delivery, such as increased propane usage during colder months or waiting until the last minute to schedule a refill. Thankfully, with automatic refills, Suburban Propane customers don’t experience the same challenges, like needing to check the tank gauge, calling for a delivery, or worrying about running out of fuel.

What Suburban Propane Customers Can Expect with a Propane Delivery

Most propane deliveries are scheduled between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to minimize disruptions, though deliveries may start earlier when fuel demand rises. After the delivery, you’ll usually receive a receipt on your tank or doorknob confirming the transaction. Additionally, Suburban Propane offers the option to enroll in a budget payment plan. Whether you’re an existing customer who’s moving, buying a house with propane, or switching to reliable propane energy, Suburban Propane’s budget payment plan can help manage expenses and simplify your billing.

With more than 95 years of experience serving our customers and their communities, Suburban Propane’s nationwide locations make it easy to get started with propane for your home. Call today and experience the versatility, comfort, and convenience of propane energy.

Grain drying is a vital process for farmers, playing a significant role in ensuring the quality and marketability of their harvests. Proper grain drying is essential for preserving the integrity and nutritional value of the crops and preventing spoilage and loss. This process is vital for maintaining a stable and efficient agricultural economy, as high-quality grains are a cornerstone of food supply chains. Propane-powered grain drying equipment supports these needs by providing a reliable energy source to achieve the ideal moisture content in grains, enabling farmers to secure their investments.

What is a Grain Dryer?

A propane grain dryer is an essential piece of equipment in the farming and agriculture industry used to reduce the moisture content of harvested  grains such as corn, wheat, and soybeans for storage and sale. This process is crucial as it prevents mold growth, spoilage, and potential loss in crop quality and value. Farmers can maintain the quality and longevity of their crops by ensuring grains dry to the optimal moisture level, making grain dryers indispensable during harvest season.

The Importance of Propane Grain Dryers in Farming Operations

The farming industry needs equipment and reliable energy to manage performance and high yields from one season to the next. Over 80 percent of grain dryers run on propane, and contemporary technologies deliver more durability with greater efficiency. From grain dryers to functioning equipment and more, agriculture powered by propane can help reduce operational costs while increasing production across farming operations.

The Benefits of Propane Grain Drying Technology

Propane-powered grain dryers offer numerous advantages over other drying methods. Here are four key benefits:

  1. Efficiency: Because of its high energy content, propane offers a higher heat output per unit of fuel than other energy sources. Additionally, propane burns more efficiently and consistently, resulting in more even heat distribution, which is critical for uniform grain drying.
  2. Reliability: Propane systems are known for their reliability and durability. Due to their portable nature, propane systems seamlessly operate in remote locations without an electrical grid connection or access to natural gas infrastructures, making propane ideal for rural farming areas.
  3. Cost-Effective: Propane grain dryers’ high efficiency translates to faster drying times and lower energy consumption, making them more cost-effective than conventional energy sources. This leads to significant savings in fuel costs over time.
  4. Environmental Considerations: Propane is a greener energy source compared to other types of conventional fuels and emits less harmful pollutants than diesel and gasoline. Unlike natural gas, propane is not a greenhouse gas, minimizing its environmental impact. In many states it is less carbon-intensive than grid electricity, making propane a cleaner alternative.

How Propane Supports Successful Farming Operations

Propane emerges as the ultimate choice for grain drying compared to conventional fuels. However, the capabilities of propane exceed drying crops. Propane is a versatile energy source that supports successful agricultural and farming operations across various applications.

  • Machinery, Equipment, and Tools: Propane-powered forklifts, mowers, generators, and small to medium-duty vehicles provide farms with dependable, uninterrupted energy.
  • Irrigation Pumps: Propane-powered irrigation pumps provide a reliable water supply for crops, especially in areas without access to traditional power sources.
  • Frost Protection: Protect crops from frost damage by maintaining optimal temperatures in fields and orchards with propane heating systems.
  • Greenhouse Heating: Propane heaters ensure a consistent and controlled climate in greenhouses, promoting healthy plant growth and extending the growing season.
  • Weed Control: Propane flame weeding offers an eco-friendly alternative to chemical herbicides, effectively managing weeds without harmful residues.
  • Pole Barn and Livestock Heating: Propane is an ideal energy source for keeping livestock warm and comfortable. Propane-powered heaters safely and efficiently maintain optimal temperatures in pole barns, livestock buildings, and poultry brooding houses.

Propane-powered grain dryers are vital for modern farming, offering efficiency, cost savings, and environmental benefits. By investing in propane technology, farmers can enhance the quality and longevity of their crops, ensuring a more profitable and sustainable operation. Additionally, propane technology benefits everyday farming and agriculture by powering irrigation systems, forklifts, and generators, further boosting productivity and sustainability across various agricultural practices. With locations and authorized resale partners nationwide, Suburban Propane will help take your farm to the next level with reliable and efficient propane solutions.

When propane is your primary energy source to power your residential or commercial business, a professional must install a propane tank to store your fuel supply. Propane tank sizes vary to ensure the tank’s capacity meets your various fueling demands. Additionally, it’s crucial to determine where to place the tanks on the property and whether the storage tank will be above ground or underground.

Advantages of Underground Propane Tanks

Aesthetics

Underground propane tanks are hidden from view, maintaining the visual allure of your property or landscape.

Temperature Stability

When it comes to variable climates and fluctuating temperatures, underground propane tanks have inherent protection from extreme weather conditions. Additionally, propane tanks buried underground may benefit from consistent ground temperatures, which can improve the efficiency of your system.

Comparing Underground and Above-Ground Propane Tanks

Installation Costs

Above-ground tank installations are generally less costly because the storage tanks are secured above the earth, requiring little disruption of your property. Meanwhile, underground propane tanks typically increase installation costs due to excavation and additional construction required. However, the long-term benefits of durability and aesthetics may offset this upfront investment.

Maintenance

While above-ground tanks are easier to inspect and maintain, underground tank surfaces require less frequent maintenance due to their protection from environmental factors.

Lifespan

Generally, above-ground and underground propane tanks have similar life expectancies. However, underground tanks, when installed professionally and maintained consistently, may last longer than above-ground tank since they are shielded from the elements.
