Prime Rib Recipe

Course Main Course
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes
Resting Time 1 hour
Total Time 1 hour 45 minutes
Servings 6 servings

Equipment

  • 1 Propane Oven

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds bone-in prime rib roast at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp fresh rosemary finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp fresh thyme finely chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • One of the key elements of this mouthwatering prime rib recipe, is for the meat to come to room temperature to ensure the prime rib is cooked evenly. This may take approximately 2-hours prior to cooking.
  • Preheat your propane oven to 450°F.
  • While the oven is heating, mix together the minced garlic, chopped rosemary, thyme, salt, pepper, and butter to create a flavorful herb rub. Place the prime rib roast on a cutting board and generously coat the entire surface with the herb rub, ensuring it's evenly distributed, the transfer to a roasting pan with the fat side facing up.
  • Place roast in the preheated oven for 15 minutes to get a perfect sear on the outside.
  • Reduce the oven temperature to 325°F and continue roasting for approximately 20 minutes to reach medium-rare doneness. Increase time in oven to achieve your desired level of doneness.
  • Once done, remove the prime rib from the oven, cover it loosely with foil, and let it rest for at least 1 hour. The meat will continue to cook outside the oven and allow the juices and seasoning to redistribute.
  • Carvethe prime rib into thick, juicy slices, and enjoy!

For most, Memorial Day is the official kick-off of summer. And summer means more time outside and enjoying food on the grill. If you’re in the market for a new grill, you are probably comparing, and possibly feeling a little overwhelmed, by all the choices between the two most popular kinds of grills: propane gas and charcoal. We may be biased, but we believe propane grills have the edge, and here’s why:

Speed: When it comes to speed, propane grills light up immediately, heat up much faster (10 minutes) than charcoal grills (30+ minutes), and shut down with the turn of a knob. The cleanup process is simple and speedy (no messy ashes to dispose of) as well.

Health: When grilling with charcoal, more carcinogens end up in your food. When fat drips from meat it creates more smoke, releasing polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which coat your food. Also, charcoal flames create heterocyclic amines (HCAs), another carcinogen you don’t want in your food. It is proven that there are fewer health risks and physical risks when using a propane grill.

Planet Earth: When you grill with propane, you are releasing far less carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Charcoal’s carbon monoxide output can be 150 times more than propane, or in easier-to-understand terms a propane grill’s carbon footprint is 1/3 of charcoal. The clean-burning characteristic of propane makes it a much better choice for the environment.

Versatility: Propane grills feature multiple burners, allowing you to heat a small section or a large one, and each section can be at a different temperature. With charcoal, it’s one surface area and it’s also difficult to manage the temperature and you can get uneven hot spots. Propane also allows you to cook delicate foods without worrying about overpowering the food with a smoke flavor.

Ease of Use: Nothing is easier than turning a few knobs to light your propane grill. With the addition of a simple tank monitor, you can check the fill amount and never run out of propane. Charcoal grills require you to have briquettes on hand and guess how many you will need based on the surface area. You will also need a lighter and possibly lighter fluid, and long tongs to move the briquettes around to make a more even heating surface.

Cost: While propane grills cost more to purchase, they cost less per use. On average, a full 20-pound propane tank can get you 25 cookouts. Twenty pounds of charcoal will get you 3 cookouts on average. (Remember, you typically pay more for propane tank exchange services than you do to get your tank refilled.)

If you’re stuck for ideas on what to cook on your propane grill, visit our Cooked on Propane blog. A few of our great grilling recipes include:

Grilled Teriyaki Wings

Salmon and Asparagus in Tinfoil

Grilled Jalapeno Poppers

Grilled Carrots

Filet Mignon

BBQ Ribs

Propane grills offer a great convenience; you can grill any time, on any night, with no real advanced planning involved. If you’re looking to get your propane tanks refilled, check our location finder to see if your local Suburban Propane customer service center offers that service.

Are there any more perfect desserts than cupcakes? We don’t think so. Nothing beats palm-sized sweet treats that you can enjoy in 3 or 4 bites. That’s why we are especially excited about National Give Someone a Cupcake Day (and with cupcakes, you can bring a smile to many someone’s in your life). Today on our Cooked on Propane blog, we’re discussing ways you can level up your cupcake game with a standard box cake mix.

While we applaud people who have the time and talent to bake cupcakes from scratch, for the average person it really isn’t necessary. Boxed cake mixes make easy work of the baking process, come in lots of flavors, and are relatively inexpensive. If you want to fool everyone into thinking your cupcakes are homemade (we won’t tell!) we’ve got some great tricks you can utilize:

  1. Add an extra egg. One more egg will add moisture, fat, and protein to the cupcake, making it softer and less likely to overbake and dry out.
  2. Replace water with whole milk, coffee, or soda. The result is a moister and more flavorful cupcake. Replace water with whole milk in vanilla and white cake mixes. Add coffee to bring out the richness of a chocolate cupcake. Lemon lime soda will make a citrus cupcake sing.
  3. Add sugar and flour to the dry mix. Increasing the sugar and flour by 1/4 – 1 cup will give a much more homemade texture to your cupcakes.
  4. Use butter instead of oil. Most boxed cake mixes call for canola or vegetable oil. Use melted butter instead. The buttery taste is unmistakable, and it adds moisture and fat to any recipe, just like any oil.
  5. Grab a handful of mix-ins. Adding a handful of sprinkles, chocolate/peanut butter/toffee chips, candy, fresh fruit, or coconut to the cake mix will not only make your cupcakes look better, but they will also taste better.
  6. Ditch canned icing. You will be surprised by how much better your cupcakes taste. Don’t be intimidated; homemade icing requires a few simple ingredients and is easy to make.

Heating an off-grid home can be a challenge, but a popular, safe, convenient, and green solution for heating is propane. Propane is a versatile energy source that can be used for cooking, heating, and generating electricity. Below, Suburban Propane touches on the steps for heating your off-grid home with propane.

Step 1: Determine your heating needs

The first step in heating your off-grid home with propane is to determine your energy needs. You must calculate the amount of heat your home requires to maintain a comfortable temperature, considering factors such as insulation, the size of your home, and your local climate.

Step 2: Choose a propane heating system

Once you have determined your need, you must choose a system that suits your home. There are several options to choose from, including propane furnaces, and boilers. Each of these options has advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to consider your needs and budget when deciding. (Our subsidiary, Homesential, has a great blog post examining the difference between a boiler and a furnace.)

Step 3: Install the propane heating system

Once you have chosen your propane heating system, it’s time to install it. This is a job that should be performed by a professional, as propane is flammable energy and can be dangerous if not handled properly. The installation process typically involves running a propane line from your tank to your heating system and making the necessary connections.

Step 4: Maintain your propane heating system

Regular maintenance is crucial to keep your propane heating system running smoothly. This includes checking the fuel levels, cleaning the filters, and making any necessary repairs. It’s also a good idea to have a professional inspect your system annually to ensure that everything is in good working order.

Step 5: Store your propane tank safely

Finally, it’s important to store your propane tank safely. Propane tanks should be kept in a well-ventilated area, away from any sources of heat or ignition. Make sure that the tank is secure and will not tip over, and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for storage.

Heating an off-grid home with propane is a cost-effective and reliable option. By following these steps, you can keep your home warm and comfortable, even when you are off the grid. Just be sure to work with a professional, like those at Suburban Propane, to ensure that your propane heating system is installed and maintained properly, for your safety and comfort.

Propane powered street cars, also known as trolley buses, are a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional gasoline or diesel-powered street cars. They run on a clean-burning fuel source and emit significantly fewer pollutants compared to traditional street cars.

One of the main advantages of propane powered street cars is their environmental benefits. Propane produces fewer emissions compared to traditional gasoline or diesel fuels. This not only helps to reduce air pollution in urban areas, but it also helps to reduce the carbon footprint of public transportation.

Another advantage of a propane powered street car is their cost-effectiveness. Propane is a less-expensive fuel source compared to gasoline or diesel, which means that operating costs for propane street cars are lower. This results in significant savings for cities and transportation companies.

Propane street cars also offer better performance compared to traditional street cars. They have a quick start-up time and can reach high speeds quickly, making them more efficient for city transportation. They are also quieter, which can reduce noise pollution in urban areas, making city life more appealing than ever.

Despite these advantages, the use of propane street cars is still relatively limited, as is the availability of propane fueling stations. However, Suburban Propane is working to make propane autogas more readily available.

Overall, propane powered street cars offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional street cars. As cities and transportation companies continue to seek ways to reduce their environmental impact and operating costs, the use of propane street cars is likely to increase in the future.
