Each year, September 11th serves as a time of reflection, remembrance, and reverence for the lives lost and the heroes who rose above during one of the most tragic days in American history. To honor their memory and the selfless first responders who risked everything to save others, Suburban Propane, in collaboration with its national partner, the American Red Cross, united to host the 10th Annual September 11th Jersey City Police & Fire 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive in Jersey City, New Jersey.

This blood drive is not just a one-time event but a continuous tribute to those who gave their lives, and an opportunity to give life to those in need. Blood donation is a critical act of kindness that can save lives in many ways. From trauma victims and surgical patients to those battling life-threatening illnesses, the need for blood is constant. According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, a person in the U.S. requires a blood transfusion, and by donating, you’re contributing directly to saving lives.

The importance of blood donation extends beyond emergencies. Hospitals nationwide rely on a steady blood supply to perform surgeries, treat cancer patients or individuals with Sickle Cell Disease, and help those with chronic illnesses. Blood shortages can lead to delays in care and put lives at risk. By coming together as a community to donate blood, we honor the bravery and sacrifice of 9/11’s heroes and embody their spirit of service and compassion. This memorial blood drive collected 116 pints, which can potentially save upward of 348 lives.

Suburban Propane is grateful for its dedicated employees who donated to our memorial blood drive or volunteered their time and energy to support donors during this event as part of the Company’s SuburbanCares philanthropic platform, focused on supporting and giving back to the communities across Suburban Propane’s national footprint.  A blood donation can be the gift that saves a life, offering hope and healing in the face of tragedy. Together, people can continue the legacy of courage and selflessness that defines this solemn day.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org , or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, or before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

All individuals who donated blood at the event were given a commemorative t-shirt and a Red Cross first aid kit, generously provided by Suburban Propane, a dedicated national supporter of American Red Cross Blood Services.

Started in 2003, “Companies That Care Day” began as an effort to improve how companies recognize and commemorate their employees and community, and is now celebrated nationally. Suburban Propane is honored to showcase the diverse ways we enhance our company culture and support our employees, community, and sustainable earth initiatives.

Understanding Employee Value

At Suburban Propane, our employees are our most valuable asset. We actively acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and achievements of our team members, many of whom have been with us for decades! In fact, 28% of our workforce has been with us for 10+ years, and numerous employees are celebrating 25, 35, and even 50+ year work anniversaries with us this year.

As a company, we promote a healthy work-life balance and actively encourage our family of employees to focus on their health and overall well-being. In addition to competitive pay and an outstanding benefits package, we are proud to offer several programs to support employees including:

Tuition Assistance:

We encourage and support employees eager to further their education through a Tuition Assistance Program, where we provide full or partial payment/reimbursement of eligible tuition expenses. Additionally, Suburban Propane has partnered with select universities to offer our employees unique educational benefits and innovative ways to continue learning.

Wellness Programs:

Suburban Propane is committed to aiding all employees in improving the health and wellness of themselves and their families. Through our wellness programs employees have an assortment of educational content, live resources, and challenges to manage health goals.  Employees can earn points by making healthy behavior choices and participating in a variety of health and wellness-related activities to achieve personal wellness goals and improve long-term health.

Charitable Contribution Match Program:

Employees are encouraged to support organizations that help others by supplying health, welfare, and other life-enhancing services as well as accredited colleges and universities. Through this program employees select qualified organizations of their choice and Suburban Propane matches their contribution dollar-for-dollar.

Community Outreach & Social Responsibility

Over the years, Suburban Propane has instilled a pillar of the company solely responsible for humanitarian efforts. The endeavor is part of the company’s SuburbanCares initiative which actively supports community efforts across the United States. Recently, SuburbanCares has undertaken charitable endeavors in numerous underserved communities. Examples of this include partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Boys & Girls Club, supporting our country’s veterans with meals through the Guy Fieri Foundation, or partnering with Forgotten Soldiers Outreach to provide “We Care” packages to deployed military service members overseas. Plus, we are very proud of our partnership with the American Red Cross. Throughout the year we sponsor numerous collaborations including the annual Jersey City Police & Fire 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive.

In addition to supporting incredible employees and philanthropic involvement, the company has devoted numerous efforts to promote safe and sustainable greener practices with two divisions in the environmental sector.

Green & Sustainable Initiatives

Suburban Propane is committed to supporting the growth and innovation of propane as a sustainable energy source. Go Green with Suburban Propane has an active global effort to monitor and reduce its carbon footprint in the energy sector. Our dedication is to guide the propane industry towards a sustainable future by promoting the environmental advantages of conventional propane and investing in developing cleaner and more sustainable energy alternatives. Suburban Renewables aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.

Ultimately, Suburban Propane understands the value of prioritizing its employees, the community in which it operates, and environmental sustainability. We are proud of our over 95 years of quality service to the people and organizations who have helped us make a difference and look forward to seeing the impact we can make in the future.

Every September, people in the United States seek meaningful ways to observe and pay tribute to the lives lost, and first responders who united in service to provide aid and recovery following the devastating event of September 11, 2001. Suburban Propane is a proud, longtime partner of the American Red Cross and joined forces to host the ninth annual Jersey City Police & Fire 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive.

This year’s annual event occurred yesterday, Monday, September 11, 2023, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Jersey City, NJ. This waterfront location on the Hudson River overlooks the New York City skyline and Freedom Tower, which now stands in the place of the former Twin Towers. The picturesque and solemn location allows attendees and donors to reflect, and honor the numerous people involved.

“Participating in this annual event alongside Jersey City’s first responders and our partners at the American Red Cross is an honor and a privilege,” said Nandini Sankara, Spokesperson at Suburban Propane and board member of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the American Red Cross. “We will never forget those who were lost in the 9/11 attacks, and encouraging others to give the gift of lifesaving blood helps us to honor their memory in an incredibly meaningful way.”

Suburban Propane’s President and CEO, Michael Stivala joined the event and donated to the effort. Mr. Stivala is a dedicated member of the New Jersey Regional Council within the NJ Region of the Red Cross. Plus, Eric LeGrand stopped by and leveraged his platform to raise awareness about the critical need for more blood donors. A total of 106 pints of blood were donated during this year’s memorial drive. A single pint of blood can save up to 3 lives.

Additionally, employees from the Company generously donated their time as volunteers assisting donors at the blood drive. This initiative is part of Suburban Propane’s SuburbanCares platform which is dedicated to supporting community efforts across the company’s footprint in the United States. Suburban Propane is honored to host this annual blood drive in observance of this solemn anniversary and encourages people to donate lifesaving blood throughout the year, not just today.
