Each year, September 11th serves as a time of reflection, remembrance, and reverence for the lives lost and the heroes who rose above during one of the most tragic days in American history. To honor their memory and the selfless first responders who risked everything to save others, Suburban Propane, in collaboration with its national partner, the American Red Cross, united to host the 10th Annual September 11th Jersey City Police & Fire 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive in Jersey City, New Jersey.

This blood drive is not just a one-time event but a continuous tribute to those who gave their lives, and an opportunity to give life to those in need. Blood donation is a critical act of kindness that can save lives in many ways. From trauma victims and surgical patients to those battling life-threatening illnesses, the need for blood is constant. According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, a person in the U.S. requires a blood transfusion, and by donating, you’re contributing directly to saving lives.

The importance of blood donation extends beyond emergencies. Hospitals nationwide rely on a steady blood supply to perform surgeries, treat cancer patients or individuals with Sickle Cell Disease, and help those with chronic illnesses. Blood shortages can lead to delays in care and put lives at risk. By coming together as a community to donate blood, we honor the bravery and sacrifice of 9/11’s heroes and embody their spirit of service and compassion. This memorial blood drive collected 116 pints, which can potentially save upward of 348 lives.

Suburban Propane is grateful for its dedicated employees who donated to our memorial blood drive or volunteered their time and energy to support donors during this event as part of the Company’s SuburbanCares philanthropic platform, focused on supporting and giving back to the communities across Suburban Propane’s national footprint.  A blood donation can be the gift that saves a life, offering hope and healing in the face of tragedy. Together, people can continue the legacy of courage and selflessness that defines this solemn day.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org , or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, or before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

All individuals who donated blood at the event were given a commemorative t-shirt and a Red Cross first aid kit, generously provided by Suburban Propane, a dedicated national supporter of American Red Cross Blood Services.

June 7th marks a special occasion for Suburban Propane as we celebrate World Caring Day and World LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) Day. This unique convergence of events underscores Suburban Propane’s dedication to providing cleaner efficient energy but also our commitment to our employees and giving back to the communities in which we operate.

Building on Suburban Propane’s legacy spanning nearly a century, the spirit of philanthropy and community involvement are integral parts of our company’s culture and values. As part of the Company’s ongoing SuburbanCares efforts, employees made significant contributions to the well-being of their neighbors and neighborhoods across our 42-state national presence. In honor of both World Caring Day and World LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) Day, we look back and reflect on the employee volunteering initiatives we’ve embarked on year to date.

Among the community initiatives pursued, several have made a positive impact, including:

In addition to local community efforts, Suburban Propane employees, joined by family and friends, made a significant impact on the environment by engaging in a wide assortment of earth-centric volunteering efforts and clean-up activities as part of the Company’s ongoing Go Green with Suburban Propane initiative, including:

  • Laramie, Wyoming: Assisted Feeding Laramie Valley, a non-profit organization, with preparing community gardens for the upcoming growing season and supporting their mission to alleviate food insecurity through a locally-led, sustainable, and all-encompassing food system that benefits residents in need
  • Fort Myers, Florida: Collaborated with the City of Fort Myers to beautify a stretch of State Rt. 41 by clearing debris and garbage from the roadway
  • Phoenix, New York: Teamed up with the Village of Phoenix to organize a street and sidewalk clean-up event, to remove trash along a stretch of Route 57
  • Coventry, Rhode Island: Worked with the Coventry Department of Public Works to clear local streets of trash and debris
  • Eugene, Oregon: Joined efforts with the City of Eugene Parks and Open Spaces for an event to remove trash and waste littered along the riverbank of Maurie Jacobs Park
  • Susquehanna Valley, Pennsylvania: In a combined effort with the Montgomery House Library, volunteers made repairs throughout the establishment and helped clean, organize, and shelf books contributing to the library’s overall improvement
  • Detroit, Michigan: Teamed up with the State of Michigan’s Island Lake Recreation Department to gather litter and beautify open spaces surrounding local beaches
  • Brevard, North Carolina: Partnered with the City of Brevard’s Adopt-a-Green Space Program, to facilitate the cleaning and restoration of the garden at Tannery Skate Park

On this dual celebration, Suburban Propane reflects on our dedication to delivering reliable propane services providing energy to homes and businesses, while nurturing the nationwide communities we serve. Suburban Propane is incredibly proud of our employees and their commitment towards their communities and conscientious efforts in environmental stewardship.

As part of our national partnership with the American Red Cross, Suburban Propane joined forces with the Red Cross’ Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) to provide support and assistance during their attendance in two Operation Stand Down events to support the health and well-being of our veterans.

Operation Stand Down is a nationwide event for veterans and military families. These events are temporary, safe retreats where military individuals experiencing homelessness – or who are at-risk, and need access to basic supplies and services receive food, necessary supplies, medical care, and various social service providers – all free of charge. These events offer a respite from the challenges and adversities veterans experience since returning from their service. Furthermore, it is also an opportunity to connect veterans with essential services to help them reintegrate into society.

As part of Suburban Propane’s SuburbanCares platform which is dedicated to supporting community efforts across the company’s footprint in the United States, our employees volunteered to promote Health and Wellness Services offered by Service to the Armed Forces at Stand Down Rhode Island in Johnston, RI, and Stand Down Connecticut in Norwich, CT. During the event, Service to the Armed Forces offered local veterans and military families free supplies, including backpacks packed with basic hygiene items, in addition to educating veterans and the community about the various types of services offered by the Red Cross in effort to provide veterans with the resources some may desperately need. A total of 4900 comfort and care necessities were handed out, including an assortment of toiletries, rain ponchos, lip balm, and other items to 424 veterans.

Supporting our country’s veterans and active-duty military personnel is crucial as these individuals continue to make great sacrifices to protect our freedom and security. By supporting them, we ensure a smoother transition to civilian life, reducing the risk of unemployment and homelessness among veterans. Additionally, strong support systems for military personnel promotes national unity, patriotism, and a sense of duty, which are critical for the transition and to reduce rates of at-risk, homeless, and unemployed veterans.

Our nation’s veterans possess valuable skills and training that can greatly benefit our society and workforce. At Suburban Propane, we honor and appreciate the brave men and women who have selflessly defended our freedom. We are dedicated to supporting veterans through our initiative called “Heroes Hired Here,” providing a range of employment advantages to those who have served. Earlier this week Suburban Propane employees collaborated with Move America Forward a Sacramento, CA-based nonprofit military charity that sends care packages filled with essential items to deployed military service members.

Suburban Propane has a long-standing history of supporting the active military, their families, and veterans across the country. Suburban Propane’s donation helped supply over 200 care packages with a variety of essential items for our troops. The effort is part of Suburban Propane’s SuburbanCares initiative in communities across the nation. Joining forces with Move America Forward, provided local Suburban Propane employees an opportunity to volunteer their time and give back to the men and women who serve us every day.

The packages are equipped with an assortment of essential non-perishable items including gourmet coffee, snacks, protein bars, SPF sunscreen and lip balm, bug repellent, magazines, phone cards, instant lunches, batteries, personal hygiene kits, handmade items, and more. Each care package provides a taste of home to up to 10 military personnel, serving more than 1,000 deployed troops.

Every military service member receives a thoughtfully assembled and personally addressed care package. While these parcels contain essential items requested by those deployed overseas, each package also comes with a heartfelt message containing words of encouragement, gratitude and sincere appreciation to lift the spirits of the men and women who bravely make sacrifices to protect our nation and its freedoms.

“Suburban Propane proudly supports our military and is a longtime veteran employer,” said Nandini Sankara, Spokesperson, Suburban Propane. “We’re honored to team up with Move America Forward to provide essential supplies and a taste of home to our deployed troops and to show their families that they are respected and cared for back home.”

At Suburban Propane, we recognize the courageous individuals who have made the utmost sacrifice in safeguarding our freedom. We are committed to supporting veterans and their families through our “Heroes Hired Here” program, which offers several employment benefits to those who have served.
